Board Meetings are open to all interested volunteers, held on the first Tuesday of the month at Capogna's Dugout, 1653 Gulf to Bay, Clearwater, FL.  Meetings begin at 6:30 pm.

 

 

 

 

 

Claudia Nable-Scoza

Claudia Nable-Scoza, BA, RN

Claudia is a Registered Nurse with more than 30 years of varied experience in the medical field. She initiated her practice at NYU Medical Center in New York City from 1974 through 1990. Her areas of expertise include Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Emergency Medicine. Her strong background in working with Spinal Cord Injuries is resultant to NYU’s cutting edge involvement as one of the main research centers in the Northeast for Spinal Cord Injuries. Shortly after moving to Florida, she became involved with disabled sailing, and has been involved for more than six years. She is one of the co founders of Sailability Greater Tampa Bay, Inc. The medical expertise she brings to Sailability serves to enhance their high level of safety standards and comfort in serving the special needs populations. Her goal is to be able to grow the program, and assist in the empowerment of individuals involved. She currently works at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs Florida.

Alder Allensworth

U.S. Sailing Certified Instructor

Alder Allensworth, M.M., LMHC is Vice-President of Sailability Greater Tampa Bay, Inc. She holds a Master’s Degree in Music Therapy and Behavioral Medicine from the University of Miami.  She became licensed as a Mental Health Counselor by the state of Florida in 1998. She holds a 50-ton US Coast Guard Masters License. She has certification as a US Sailing Dinghy instructor. She also holds certifications in scuba diving, hypnosis, and ropes courses. The Hospice of the Florida Sun coast has employed her for eight years, where she works in the area of grief counseling.

Alder has been involved with working with people with disabilities for over 20 years, both on a professional and volunteer basis. Other professional employment includes 15 years in treatment programs for troubled adolescents in the fields of music therapy, scuba diving, dolphin-assisted therapy, and ropes courses. She taught people with disabilities to SCUBA dive for 3 years, in the Florida Keys. She has been volunteering for and teaching people with disabilities to sail for the past five years. She has been committed to Sailability Greater Tampa Bay, Inc since its conception in July of 2000, holding offices of President, Vice President, and head sailing instructor. She was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 1990, and was given a life-limiting prognosis. Water sports became an area of personal healing. Sailing is one of the few sports that people with disabilities can participate with able-bodied people on an equal basis. The Sailability program was founded in February of 2001. Currently all sailing programs are being conducted out of the Clearwater Sailing Center.  
Seven Access Dinghies have been donated to the program, along with a trailer. The program has the capability of being mobile, and has been taken to other communities to share the sailing experience. The Sailability Program hosted the Second Annual Access Dinghy North American Championships and International Regatta in October of 2001 and the fourth Annual Access Dinghy North American Championships in 2004. Participants includes a fully integrated field of people of all ages and abilities.  Sailability was awarded, at the National Sailing Programs Symposium, the nation’s “Outstanding New Sailing Program” of 2001 by the Community Sailing Counsel of US Sailing. Alder is dedicated to providing opportunities to people for personal growth through hands on, fully integrated activities.

Bruce Bayes

 Co-Founder, President, Sales and Marketing Director/General Manager, Custom Mobility, Inc.

Bruce Bayes has been a supplier of rehabilitation medical equipment in Florida for almost 20 years. In the early 1980's, Bruce pioneered a custom seating division in his company to address the unique seating needs of clients who use wheelchairs.

Bruce has been an innovator in seated-mobility product development. He has designed some new products, has served on the advisory panels of several wheelchair manufacturers, including Quickie and Everest & Jennings, and has suggested product innovations that were incorporated by the Safety Travel Chair Company.

Bruce has been a leader in service delivery, pioneering the use of a professional "team" approach to product selection and establishing many "Seating Clinics" throughout Florida. In addition, Bruce serves as an Advisor to the Florida Medicaid Program in reviewing state funding guidelines.

Board Members Volunteer:

Ø       Assist sailors on and off of boats during Sailability Florida's programs and activities.

Ø       Assist with rigging and de-rigging boats used in Sailability Florida's programs and activities

Ø       Assist with the planning, coordinating and organizing of community events, regattas, and other activities.

Ø       Assist with fundraising and grant writing.

Ø       Assist with administrative duties such as making phone calls to volunteers and participants regarding demonstration and community sails; computer work and much more.

Ø       Instruct and teach classes. Must be a US Sailing Certified Instructor.

Ø       Assist with the upkeep and maintenance of all Sailability Florida's equipment including but not limited to boats.

 

Ø      We recognize volunteers who put in a tremendous amount of effort and service. 

Ø      We develop awards for our volunteers and give back to them for all they do to make our program the success it has become today.
